Anxiety comes in many forms, some of which are normal, natural, and even healthy.

Many people feel anxious about things like taking a test, illness or going on a first date. In these cases, anxiety is our body’s cue that we want to pay attention to because we care about the outcome.

There are some times, however, when anxiety can be too large for the situation, or maybe nothing is happening but you just feel so anxious.

Below are a few common signs of anxiety when it starts to cause problems:

  • You worry more often than not or worry excessively about small things.

  • You have trouble turning the worry off and find it difficult to control.

  • Restlessness & difficulty sleeping become common even though you’re tired all the time.

  • Physical symptoms like tension headaches, muscle soreness, or GI trouble.

  • You miss out on social connections, work, or activities you enjoy because the anxiety is overwhelming.

  • You struggle with procrastination and perfectionism.

If this sounds like you, anxiety symptoms may be starting to get in the way of you being able to fully live life. However, help is available. Your anxiety CAN get better. Our counselors can aid you in reducing your anxiety so you can live a full, balanced life.

Anxiety treatment is different for everyone

No two people are the same. Even though there are common “symptoms of anxiety” how they show up in your life will be unique. As therapists, we get that. That said, if you’re wanting to get an idea of what to expect in counseling for anxiety, there is a general progression of how a therapist for anxiety at our practice will approach treatment.

Early in therapy, clients will explore ways to reduce baseline anxiety right away by using methods like meditation, exercise, and grounding skills. At the same time, you’ll work with your therapist during sessions to examine anxious thoughts and challenge them. In challenging these anxious thoughts, we’ll use specific, effective anxiety management techniques that build awareness of our inner voice, challenge negative beliefs about ourselves and the world, and encourage us to live in the moment.

Most treatment focuses on two key components: reducing baseline anxiety and challenging anxious thinking patterns.

Anxiety has a nasty habit of forcing you to live in the future. Thoughts such as, “What if they don’t like me?” or “What if I fail?” start to take over your thoughts. However, working with our counselors can guide you back to the present by helping you accept what you can and cannot control.
