An Invitation to Grieve

As we pass All Saints Day I remember a good friend of mine from college who died from complications with cancer almost 6 years ago. She was a vibrant and creative person who moved easily from serious to silly, and from lighthearted to profound. On the eve of her memorial service, new and old friends gathered for a dance party in her honor. One of our friends shared the song Someone Great from LCD Sound System.

From that time this song has become part of my mourning ritual. I listen, at times alone, at times with others, and dance. For me, the music and movement allows grief and sorrow that can sometimes be stuck to move within me and resolve.

This has helped me in the time of Covid when we have had so many losses and loves to grieve and so few opportunities to participate in our traditional mourning rituals. I am inviting you to share this ritual of mine, perhaps to put up a picture, light a candle, push play and let the sometimes bitter, sometimes sweet sorrow that comes with the loss of someone great move and resolve.
